The First Electrictromobility-Friendly Motorway

All the MSSs in the motorways of Nea Odos currently have electrical charging capability. The Ionia Odos was the first motorway in Greece to offer electric vehicle charging at each of its MSSs starting in 2018. The company owns the most advanced and fastest chargers in Europe, capable of fast charging an electric vehicle with sufficient autonomy, at 80% of its capacity and within only 20 minutes. Each charger, at each station, has the ability to charge up to 2 cars simultaneously, providing a unique service experience for electric vehicle owners. Nea Odos focuses on utilizing energy from renewable sources for powering the electric charging infrastructure.

AI-Powered Motorway Safety System

For the first time on a Greek motorway, Artificial Intelligence in state-of-the-art cameras, placed in open road construction at the entrances to the roads, is being used. The purpose of the system is to detect the entry of animals and people onto the motorway, as well as vehicles moving in the opposite direction, in order to ensure the immediate response of the competent authorities and the prevention of accidents. The innovative AI camera system includes image analysis software, while all incidents are immediately reported to the Traffic Management Centers (TMCs). By the end of 2023, 117 AI cameras have been installed on the ramps of the motorway under our responsibility, with the prospect of adding 55 additional cameras by the end of 2024.

Go Green Initiative

Through the "Go Green" initiative, we launched the first "green", 100% electric vans, which will initially be used as maintenance and work vehicles, putting into practice the strategic goal of protecting the environment in an innovative way.

We are now the 1st operation, maintenance and management company of motorways in the country that implemented a complete plan of replacement of the vehicle fleet with 100% electric and hybrid, while equipping all of our facilities with 18 electric vehicle chargers.

Motorist Service Station Malakasas (Sirios): The 1st and largest Hybrid Electric Car Charging Station in Greece

The creation of the first and largest hybrid electric car charging station in Greece was completed from Nea Odos in Μ.S.S. Malakasas (Sirios). With the installation of photovoltaic panels on the canopies of the parking lots, the production of "green" energy and the charging of electric cars are combined.

Project highlights:

  • Total investment exceeding €900,000
  • Construction of parking lot roofs specifically designed for cars
  • Installation of photovoltaic panels with a cumulative power output of around 500kWp
  • 4 chargers with a power of 120kW each
  • Hybrid inverters

Organic Waste Recycling System

Giving priority to the circular economy, Nea Odos is the first motorway in Greece to install composters for the environmentally sound utilisation of organic waste generated by the operation of the Motorist Service Stations (MSS). Specifically, there are mechanical composters on both sides of the Atalanti MSS with the capacity to handle up to 100 kg of organic waste per week. The food and coffee waste, together with waste from green areas, is composted and turned into fertiliser, which is used in planting work on the motorway. At the same time, household composters were installed in the kitchens of the company's headquarters, so that food and coffee waste can be converted into a soil conditioner that is used in grounds of our building.

In December 2023, a composter was procured for the Malakassa MSS and will be operational within 2024, while composters will gradually be installed at other MSSs.

In 2023

  • We collected 1,700 kg of compost

Measurement of Air Pollution

Nea Odos aims to effectively manage air pollution and mitigate its negative impacts. Measurements at air pollution measuring stations are carried out systematically on a 24-hour basis and the recording system communicates with analysts to calculate within 5 minutes possible exceedances of the limits set by the legislation on average primary pollutant emission values and parameters (CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2, O3, TSP, PM10, PM2.5, C6H6 (Benzene), C7H8 (toluene) and xylene).
